Manchester United missed out on the chance to finish as Group H winners after succumbing to a disappointing 2-1 defeat away at Valencia.

Carlos Soler's brilliant low drive after 17 minutes handed the La Liga outfit a deserved lead and a bizarre own goal from Phil Jones just 60 seconds after the restart summed up a night to forget in Spain.

Marcus Rashford came off the bench to head home a late consolation on 87 minutes but it wasn't enough for United.

The defeat means that United finish second in Group H and it will count as a missed opportunity for Jose Mourinho's side, as Juventus lost 2-1 away at Young Boys in Switzerland.

Ahead of Sunday's crunch clash with Liverpool, United made eight changes and it certainly showed as Valencia dominated the early stages.

And it came as no surprise when the hosts took the lead. Cristian Piccini's cross was cleared by Phil Jones to the feet of Soler and he drove a low effort into the far corner.

Antonio Valencia was fortunate to escape an early bath after just 10 minutes, sliding two-footed into left-back Toni Lato but escaped with a booking. Lato later came off with a shin injury.

Despite being given a chance to impress, the midfield duo of Paul Pogba and Fred failed to catch the eye and the French star was guilty of an embarrassing miss when he fired wide from three yards out.

That would prove vital when Batshauyi was put through on goal only to see Jones divert Soler's pass into his own net, leaving Romero completely bemused.

Rashford and Lingard were summoned from the bench late on and combined to get a late consolation with three minutes to go, with Rashford rising above Ruben Vezo to head into the corner.

But it was far too little, too late from Mourinho's men, who now face the prospect of a tough tie in the knockout stage draw on Monday.
