Legacies is going to have a pretty exciting genre crossover in season two.

The Vampire Diaries and Originals spin-off has cast former Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel star Alexis Denisof for a mystical role, according to TVLine.

While he was used to fighting off all manner of supernatural threats as the watcher Wesley Wyndam-Pryce in the Buffyverse, he's joining Legacies as "urbane British sorcerer" Professor Vardemus.

The professor is described as "a bit of a dandy", who nevertheless becomes popular with the students at the Salvatore School because of his "his steadfast belief in the superiority of their supernatural world".

Denisof most recently starred in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina as the unassuming partner of the demon-possessed Madam Satan – so hopefully he fares better this time!

He will be making his first appearance as Professor Vardemus in Legacies in episode two this autumn.

Legacies showrunner Julie Plec has spent the summer dropping some intriguing hints about what the second season will bring, including the introduction of an "an old, old, old-world vampire" played by Descendants' Thomas Doherty.

She also hinted at Comic-Con International this month that it's only a matter of time before The Vampire Diaries character Kai Parker turns up in Legacies.

"We're coming for you, [Kai actor] Chris Wood," she told AfterBuzz TV at Comic-Con. "Get ready."

Writer Brett Matthews chimed in by adding: "It’s inevitable, Chris Wood. Like, we know where you live."

Legacies will return on October 10 on The CW in the US.
