Vera ITV filming sees famous South Shields business' name changed for hit drama

A very famous South Shields business had its name changed last week, as the cast and crew of Vera took over the premises to shoot scenes for the hit drama's last ever series.

It's now been a month since ITV broke Vera fans' hearts with the news that the much loved show will air its final ever episodes in 2025, 14 years after it made its debut on screen. On the same day that the announcement was made, the Vera cast, including lead actress Brenda Blethyn, reunited for a script read through, in preparation for filming starting the following week.

The first location the Vera team were spotted was Cambois in Northumberland, with production then moving onto Blyth, Gateshead and Ashington in the following days. As cameras rolled, casting calls for extra roles kept appearing online, with a number of the adverts specifically relating to the shoots in Shields.

having been in nearby Whitburn a day earlier, ameras were spotted outside South Shields Town Hall and they then moved into the town centre, with the frontage of legendary ice cream haunt Minchella's transformed rather drastically, as it became Bacadelli's for the purposes of the plot. As the shop became a hive of activity, filming quickly attracted the interest of locals, one of whom filmed the outside of Michella's in its new guise.

The shot of 'Bocadelli's' was shared on X (Twitter) and quickly received a big reaction, with one social media user responding: "I look forward to seeing that episode," as another commented: "I was today old when I learned there was a Minchella’s in the town. I’ve NEVER noticed it!!"

After filming wrapped in Shields, the cast and crew headed back to Blyth, where they caused quite a stir during filming on a housing estate, with Brenda seen going through a scene inside one of the properties.
