Vernon Kay hailed as 'legend' as he raises millions for Children in Need

Vernon Kay was called a “legend” as he completed an ultra-marathon that he said was “one of the most painful” experiences he’d ever had.

The BBC Radio 2 presenter ran 116 miles from Leicester to Bolton to raise money for Children In Need, making over four million pounds.

He ran over four days, jogging into Bolton Wanderers stadium and finishing on Friday morning (17 November).

What did Vernon Kay say after finishing his run?

Kay looked emotional as he wrapped up his run and discovered how much he had raised.

Throwing his arms over his head, he said the sum "made it all worthwhile".

The star spoke to Radio 2 breakfast host Zoe Ball as he crossed the finish line, admitting he was “absolutely spent, physically, mentally”.

“It's been one of the most painful and joyous experiences I've ever had,” he said, also joking about needing a knee replacement.

“It was just one foot in front of the other, that's what it was,” Kay went on.

What did fans say?

Fans were blown away by Kay’s effort, posting messages on social media saying how “amazing it was”.

“What an achievement and an unbelievable display of determination,” one person said on X, which was formerly Twitter.

“Get in there @vernonkay absolute legend,” said someone else.

Another fan posted: “WELL DONE @vernonkay!!! been following all week his progress in the ultra-marathon while listening to @BBCRadio2

“WHAT an achievement for the most important cause.”

“You did a blinder,” wrote somebody else, advising the star to have nice soak in the bath.

“Hopefully thousands of children will benefit from your efforts here,” they added.

Tess Daly couldn’t be there because of Strictly

Kay’s mum and dad were there to congratulate him as he jogged into the stadium amid cheers.

But his wife Tess Daly could not be there because she was in Blackpool for Strictly Come Dancing.

She posted on Instagram: “Absolutely gutted not to be at the finish line not to cheer you on today! (am at Strictly) BUT what a moment, what an achievement, I am SO PROUD of what you’ve done!"

Daly said she could see that the run had "taken a physical toll" but that what Kay had done was "incredible".

She added that "the generosity and support shown by everyone that has so kindly donated" and those who turned out to support the star along the way had been "beyond wonderful".

"I know it’s kept you going (and me too), love you to bits Vern, you’ve got this!!” she said.
