Azeris Hold Protests in Iran Over Racial Slur on Children's TV Show

Scores of people took to the streets of Tabriz, in northwestern Iran, on November 9, in demonstration against the broadcasting of a slur against ethnic Azeris on a Iranian children’s television program on November 6. Demonstrators were met by on the streets by police, who dealt with the demonstrations peacefully, according to reports.

The program, Fitileh, which has been been cancelled by country’s state broadcaster in the wake of the controversy, contained a satiric scene that depicted an Azerbaijani child brushing his teeth with a toilet brush. Credit: Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty
