IS Captures Ancient City of Palmyra

The monitoring group, Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, reported on Thursday, May 21, that the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria fell into the hands of Islamic State (IS) the previous day. According to Al Jazeera, residents inside the city confirmed that the entire city had been seized causing many to flee.

This video by supporters of IS, Aamaq News, shows the deserted streets en route to the city centre. It also shows a crowd of men gathered in the city, some cheering at the arrival of the militant group.

Palmyra is a UNESCO World Heritage site dating back to the 1st and 2nd century, famous for its ancient architecture. Hundreds of sculptures and other artefacts have already been moved to safer locations. Credit: Aamaq News
