Former Maldivian President Manhandled Outside Justice Building

Scuffles broke out outside the Justice Building in the Maldives capital Male on Monday, February 23, as former president Mohamed Nasheed was lead to court by police. Nasheed was wrestled to the ground by police during the altercation. The former president was arrested on February 22, amid fears that he would flee the country to avoid alleged terrorism charges over the January 2012 arrest of senior judge Abdulla Mohamed.

His arrest sparked clashed with police in Malé on Sunday. Pepper gas was used against supporters of Nasheed’s Maldivian Democratic Party who had gathered outside his residence while protests continued into the night in central Malé. Credit: Facebook/Zayn Inax
