Gold BAFTA mask trophies in the making

Ahead of the BAFTA award show, Reuters steps into a workshop to learn how the bronze masks are made.

Designed by U.S. sculptor Mitzi Cunliffe in 1955, the 8 pound tragicomic masks have been hand-made at New Pro Foundries factory since the 1970s.

"Well there's a bit of pride obviously, but again over the years you get a little bit jaded. But you still get a buzz, there's still that buzz about it. It's a significant piece of British workmanship, I'll put it that way," New Pro Foundries Managing Director Patrick Helly said.

Dark drama "Joker" leads the nominations for the BAFTAS, earning 11 nods at the United Kingdom's top movie honours. Martin Scorsese's gangster movie "The Irishman" and Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" followed with 10 nominations each.
