Ireland's Health Minister Calls for Public to Support Same-Sex Marraige

Ireland’s health minister Leo Varadkar has called on the electorate to vote in favour of legalising same-sex marriage when they go to the polls for a referendum on Friday, May 22. Varadkar, a member of the ruling Fine Gael party, became the first openly gay minister in Irish history, when he publicly revealed his sexuality in a radio interview in January.

Last month, Northern Ireland’s health minister resigned several days after he linked same sex marriage to child abuse.

The results of a opinion poll released a week out from the marriage vote suggest that the referendum will pass. Homosexuality was decriminalised in Ireland in 1993.

If the referendum passes, Ireland would become the first country in the world to allow same-sex couples to marry thanks to a popular vote. Credit: YouTube/Vote With Us
