Islamic State Militants Release Hundreds of Captured Yazidi Population

Hundreds of the Yazidi minority population were reunited with their families in the Iraqi province of Kirkuk on April 8 after being released from captivity by Islamic State. The Yazidi minority, a Kurdish monotheist population, were captured after Islamic State militants launched a deadly attack on the Yazidi communities around Iraq’s Sinjar mountain in 2014, forcing thousands to flee into the mountains and elsewhere in the Kurdistan region.

According to Kurdish media, the refugees were “generally in good health” after arriving in Kirkuk’s Humayria village on April 8. Credit: Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty
