Italian Vessel Rescues 450 Migrants in Mediterranean

More than 400 migrants were rescued while trying to cross the Mediterranean from Egypt on April 22 during the latest surge of people taking the deadly route to Europe. UNHCR estimated that the number of migrants losing their lives during the journey across the Mediterranean had surpassed 800 as of April 22.

In this video, UNCHR talks to a refugee who was in the sea at the same time that a boat capsized, killing 850 people, on April 18. “I covered my head and held my daughter. I didn’t want to see whatever was about to happen to us,” she said. “I was scared. It was a huge responsibility with all the children.” Credit: YouTube/United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)
