Lawmaker Gives Reasons for Opposing Hong Kong Electoral Reform

Lawmaker Dennis Kwok addressed Hong Kong’s Legislative Council on Wednesday, June 17, to explain his reasons for voting against Beijing’s electoral reform package. The package was not passed after 28 members voted to reject it.

“We vote to reject this proposal, then we send a strong signal to this administration, to the Central People’s Government, to the world, and most importantly, to ourselves as citizens of Hong Kong – that we stand not for political expediency, not for economic benefits, but for the true principles of universal suffrage and One Country, Two Systems.”

Kwok is a member of Hong Kong’s Legislative Council representing the legal profession. He is the founding member of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy Civic Party and a core member of the Citizens’ Commission for Constitutional Development headed by former Chief Secretary Anson Chan.
