Passenger Rescued After Boat Capsizes on Yangtze River

A boat carrying 458 people capsized in China’s Yangtze River on Monday night, June 1, leaving hundreds missing. The boat set sail from Nanjing, Jiangsu province, and was travelling to Chongqing city, when it sank in the Yangtze River, near Jianli, in China’s Hubei province. China’s Meteorological Administration said a force-12 cyclone struck the area when the ship went down.

China’s CCTV News reported on June 2 that a report had found “the ship was not overloaded and was equipped with sufficient life jackets” and that 19 people had been rescued by Tuesday afternoon.

Footage here shows the rescue of a 65-year-old passenger, according to CCTV News.

CCTV said: “Three divers went 15 meters under water several times to search for passengers trapped inside the overturned ship. And they found the passenger near the ship’s bow. After being rescued, the female passenger was immediately sent to hospital.” Credit: YouTube/CCTV News
