Police Battle 'Armed Group' in Macedonian City

The sound of gunfire was heard in Macedonia’s third largest city of Kumanovo early on May 9, amid reports of battles between police and dozens of gunmen. Several people were wounded, according to Macedonian plusinfo, and residents were advised to stay indoors. A spokesperson for the ministry of interior confirmed that police had launched an operation against an armed group. The reasons behind the attack are still unclear.

According to RFE/RL, last month armed men aligning themselves with the disbanded Albanian paramilitary group, the Kosovo Liberation Army, attacked a border checkpoint in northern Macedonia.
