Police Disperse Ethiopian-Led Demonstration in Tel Aviv

Israeli police clashed with protesters from Israel’s Ethiopian community on Sunday evening, May 3, after footage emerged showing two Israeli policemen beating an IDF soldier of Ethiopian descent. The footage sparked widespread condemnation by the Ethiopian Jewish community, who called for a march in Rabin Square, Tel Aviv. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met the soldier, Damas Pakada, on Monday.

Israeli police used water cannons and smoke to disperse the crowds and arrested 43 people, according to reports. Footage posted by an Israeli activist shows tear gas being used against protesters in Rabin Square. Credit: Facebook/Yariv Oppenheimer
