Protesters in Uyo Call on Electoral Commission to 'Give Us Our Votes'

All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters in Nigeria’s Akwa Ibom State are calling for last weekend’s elections to be declared void. Protesters took to the streets of Uyo on Monday, March 30, claiming there had been irregularities in the presidential and National Assembly elections. Members of the APC, Nigeria’s main opposition party, described the election as a “sham.”

Amadu Atai, state chairman of the APC, said the voting had not been conducted in accordance with “extant electoral laws and guidelines” because result sheets were not provided by the electoral commission, according to local reports.

“We hereby call on the Independent National Electoral Commission to cancel the elections and reschedule fresh polls that would be conducted within and not in breach of electoral guidelines,” Atai said in a briefing in Uyo on Sunday.

Thousands of APC supporters demonstrated against alleged irregularities on Sunday in Rivers State, which borders Akwa Ibom to the west, AFP reported.
