Seven People Dead in Philadelphia Train Derailment; Death Toll Could Rise

Philadelphia authorities confirmed seven people died when an Amtrak train derailed on May 12, and the death toll could rise. The National Transportation Safety Board is at the scene on May 13 to start its investigation, and officials reported the train was traveling over 100 miles per hour — more than double the speed limit in that stretch of the tracks.

More than 200 people were injured in the crash, eight of them listed in critical condition.

Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor service remained suspended between New York and Philadelphia on May 13. SEPTA and NJ Transit trains also were affected by the suspension and, in some cases, were cross honoring tickets.
