Tropical Storm Linfa Weakens After Sweeping Through Hong Kong

Hong Kong experienced, albeit briefly, its first signal no. 8 typhoon of the year on Thursday, July 9, as former typhoon Linfa approached the city. The warning was only in place for six hours until Linfa was weakened to a tropical storm and moved past Hong Kong. The storm brought strong winds and did not cause any significant damage apart from two downed trees, according to reports.

Linfa also brought torrential rains to the eastern Chinese city of Shantou in Guangdong, where the storm made landfall earlier on Thursday.
