Typhoon Goni Lashes Kyushu Island

Typhoon Goni landed in the Kumamoto Prefecture of Japan’s southern main island Kyushu on Tuesday morning, August 25, according to state broadcaster NHK. The typhoon battered Kyushu with winds of up to 124 mph (200 kph). Heavy rain also affected the southern tip of Honshu Island, with more than four inches (11 centimeters) of rainfall recorded in one hour in the city of Shimonoseki.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency issued warnings for landslides, floods, storm surges and tornadoes across much of Kyushu and southern Honshu.
