US Coast Guard Lifts Man, Dog From Sailboat in Distress

The US Coast Guard rescued two people and a dog from a sailboat on Lake Superior near Sand Islands, Wisconsin, on October 6. The guard responded to a call that the sailboat was taking on water and was being pushed by the wind and could run aground, according to a press release.

One passenger fell overboard and swam to shore while a crew attempted to pass a rescue line to the sailboat. A swimmer was able to bring the passenger from the shore to the guard’s boat. Because of shallow water, treacherous waves and a strong wind, a helicopter was used to hoist the remaining passenger and the dog from the sailboat.

The passengers were taken to a local hospital, but the US Coast Guard did not report their status or their identities. Credit: US Coast Guard
