US Senator plans bill to ban assault weapons

A move is already underway to address the political hot-potato of US gun legislation in the wake of the Newtown killings. A senior senator from California is planning to introduce a bill in the senate next month to place a ban on assault weapons. It will also be proposed in the House of Represenatives. Speaking in a televised debate, Senator Diane Feinstein said “It is a first-day bill I am going to introduce in the Senate and the same bill that will be introduced in the house. A bill to ban assault weapons. It will ban the sale, the transfer, the importation and the possession. Not retroactively but prospectively.” Gun laws are never far away from the headlines in the US, given the frequency of high-profile killings like the one at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin earlier in the year where six died. Or the attack at a cinema in Colorado in which 12 lives were lost.
