We have had teases, teases and yet more teases, but after months of anticipation, Doctor Who FINALLY returned to our Saturday nights this evening (April 15).

In 'The Pilot', the first episode of Peter Capaldi's last series as the Time Lord, we were introduced to Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie), and things certainly kicked off in style

The Doctor's new companion was catapulted into the TARDIS, though had to deal with the emotional toil of her crush becoming a water phantom that chases the pair through space and time.

Still, in the end we were set up for a series of Bill and the Doctor's adventures, and it seems viewers were pretty positive about the show's return.

The Doctor made a grand(ish) entrance:

And there were past references within seconds, naturally:

People fell in love with Bill instantly:

And her Doctor name mishap is always a hit:

The Doctor himself was, inexplicably, a lecturer which raised some eyebrows:

And his running like a penguin came with dire consequences too:

This week's big bag was a little ... random?

And then, of course, there was the moment a new companion saw the TARDIS for the first time:

And overall, viewers were pretty impressed by the series opener:

Doctor Who airs on BBC One.
