Viewers quickly flocked to social media following the first episode of new two-part Channel 4 documentary Danny Dyer: How To Be A Man, many of whom called it “thought-provoking”. The first episode saw the former EastEnders actor delve into the world of masculinity and how things have changed for men over the years.

The series, which made its debut on Tuesday, April 16, features interviews with men, including a politician, psychologists, a mental health expert, a fitness expert, a sex therapist, an influencer, male victims of domestic abuse, and members of the Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus who offer a range of voices and perspectives on this complex subject.

Danny explores gender stereotypes, male attitudes to mental health, and exploring the changing roles of men in society. He also engages in conversations that challenge perceptions and open up a dialogue on what it means to be a modern man in Britain today.

Writing on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, after the first episode, one person said: “A thought-provoking documentary, with touching moments and insights from Danny Dyer. Truly inspiring.”

A second commented: “Danny Dyer did a really decent job of exploring modern masculinity & linking it to issues of social health & wellbeing. He was smart, witty, sensitive and informed.” A third echoed: “Danny Dyer...what a terrific show on channel 4 tonight...doin it for the guys out there x.”

A fourth said: “A lot of ground covered over the hour. Great insights, exploring gender roles and pressures,” while another shared: “That Danny Dyer doc about masculinity was fantastic. Hopefully it will start some conversations about what it is to be a man now.”

Speaking to Channel 4 ahead of the documentary’s release, Danny said: “As an actor, I've played countless characters, but now I am making a documentary about what the evolving place of men really is. If you were to look on social media, it might seem like people are either completely embracing or rejecting traditional gender roles, without much room for nuance. That’s why we wanted to chat to real men that are representative of the UK today, to hear their thoughts on what being a modern man is to them. To me, being a man isn’t about trying to fit a mould, it's about showing a bit of heart and respecting yourself and others so I'm hoping this documentary gets the geezers talking.”
