Yahoo News Viola Davis and Gillian Anderson's new show gets update
Viola Davis and Gillian Anderson will be back on the small screen very soon.
The How to Get Away with Murder star and the Sex Education actress are only two members of an incredibly star-studded cast signing up for political drama series The First Lady.
According to Collider, US cable channel Showtime has announced that its "American version of The Crown" will be premiering in the first quarter of 2022.
Anderson memorably starred in The Crown as former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, and now is set to play the elder version of Eleanor Roosevelt in The First Lady.
Her part of the show will capture Eleanor's marriage to 32nd president Franklin D Roosevelt – played by 24's Kiefer Sutherland. Boardwalk Empire's Charlie Plummer and Home and Away's Eliza Scanlen have been cast as young versions of the Roosevelts.
Viola Davis and The Handmaid's Tale star OT Fagbenle will be portraying the elder versions of the Obamas, while Julian De Niro and The Batman's Jayme Lawson are the younger versions.
Marvel's Michelle Pfeiffer will be first lady Betty Ford, with The Dark Knight's Aaron Eckhart as former president Gerald Ford. The young versions will be played by The Society's Kristine Froseth and Top Gun: Maverick's Jake Picking.
The Night Manager's Emmy Award winner Susanne Bier will be directing The First Lady from a concept by Best. Worst. Weekend. Ever.'s Aaron Cooley.
Showtime executive Amy Israel announced: "Susanne is a visionary director who commands the screen with fierce honesty and a singular visual style.
"With these formidable artists in front of and behind the camera, we couldn't be more thrilled – especially at this unique moment in time for our nation – about the powerful promise of The First Lady."
The First Lady's UK release schedule hasn't yet been decided.
