Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has previously expressed his excitement for Arne Slot's first season as Reds head coach amid links to Saudi Pro League giants Al Nassr.

The Gulf club already boast Cristiano Ronaldo, Aymeric Laporte and former Liverpool star Sadio Mane as some of the players within the squad. On Thursday, Spanish outlet Marca claimed that the Dutchman's representatives met with chiefs at the Riyadh club over a possible move.

In their report, it has been suggested that Al Nassr are looking to add reinforcements to challenge for the league title and in doing so have tabled an offer that would make the Dutch captain the highest-paid defender in the world.

Van Dijk, who will turn 33 next month, has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Anfield and will be available for a free transfer next summer.

The centre-back was handed the honour of being Liverpool captain after the shock exit of Jordan Henderson to Saudi Arabia as he reunited with Reds icon Steven Gerrard at Al Ettifaq. He was one of three players who swapped Anfield for the Saudi Pro League as Roberto Firmino joined Al Ahli following the expiry of his contract, while Brazilian compatriot Fabinho completed a move to then-champions Al Ittihad.

Van Dijk will lead Holland out at this summer's European Championships, which get underway on Friday (June 14) as Germany take on Scotland.

Prior to the tournament, he was at the Formula One for the Monaco Grand Prix and speaking to Sky Sports, the 32-year-old was asked if he thought the transition from Jurgen Klopp to Arne Slot would be 'pain-free'. He said: "I hope so. Obviously I have full trust in the club and all the decisions going forward.

"It's exciting as well. Change is always a bit in the unknown, but I have got full confidence and am looking forward to the new season already.

"100 per cent, but success is not guaranteed," he added when asked whether the Reds could build on their third-place finish. "That's pretty obvious. We are going to work our socks off in order to make it happen and we have a good coach coming in, a good backroom staff. We are a very good team. Let's see what happens."

Van Dijk doubled down on the claim that he made weeks earlier in light of their 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on the final day. The Liverpool captain cut an emotional figure as the club bid farewell to Klopp after nine successful years at the helm but the Dutchman did make his feelings on the future clear.

In May, he said: "I am very excited [for the future], especially next season. That feeling came a couple of months ago when we turned the page.

"There is still a lot to work on but now we have the full pre-season to work on it and that is the plan. What I am hearing is that it is going to be a very intense pre-season with a lot of physical work, a lot of tactical work and trying to get ready for a tough season. That is very exciting.

"Players are leaving, hopefully players can come in for the start of pre-season. Everyone who can come in and improve the football club will help all of us and push us all.

"The focus for next season will be to make sure everyone is ready and can contribute. It doesn't matter how old you are, you have to perform."
