The Voice UK competition intensified tonight (January 30) as the coaches continued to expand their teams. However, there was one contestant in particular that caught their attention.

Andrew Bateup, the 31-year-old singing teacher from Tunbridge Wells, sang 'How Am I Supposed To Live Without You' by Michael Bolton.

In his early career, Andrew had the opportunity to perform in Joseph The Musical, but when the show ended he struggled with the audition process and decided to get a job that provided more stability.

Before the audition, Andrew said: "If I don’t get a chair turn, I think it might be a sign to stop chasing the dream. That’s the reality of it."

The coaches were impressed with Andrew's performance – Sir Tom Jones and Olly Murs turned around for him.

Andrew's family and friends were watching in the virtual audience and Olly mentioned that two of Andrew's friends had been drinking pints and eating crisps throughout the show.

Speaking about his previous experience in the performance world, Andrew said: "The last few years, I've kind of drifted a bit, the older I got the more anxious I got, the more kind of down I got when I went away from auditions and didn't get through.

"Over the last couple of years, I just stopped. I stopped auditioning because I kind of lost that little sparkle that you really need to do things like this."

Anne-Marie was overwhelmed when she heard about Andrew's journey, it reduced her to tears, and she said that she could see what a good and lovely person he is.

"I am so glad you are here. I am so glad you plucked up something inside of you and it made you come here because you are going to be such a great addition to the show," Anne-Marie said.

After some consideration, Andrew decided to join Olly's team as his chair was the first to turn.

The Voice UK continues next Saturday (February 6) at 8:30pm on ITV.
