Waitrose warns shoppers who buy butter and says 'as a precaution'

A major supermarket recalls packs of butter over fears it contains pieces of 'blue cloth'. Waitrose has pulled 500g blocks of its Essential Waitrose & Partners Salted Dairy Butter with the best before date of June 19, 2024 - no other dates are affected by the recall.

A Waitrose spokesperson said: “We’re recalling this line as a precaution, after fragments of blue cloth were found in a very small number of products. We’re sorry for the inconvenience and will be offering customers a full refund.”

The recall only applies to Waitrose Essential Salted Butter (500g) with a best before date of 19.06.24. No other lines are impacted - including our 250g or unsalted versions.

Customers are advised to return it to our stores or contact Waitrose's customer service team for a full refund. Waitrose says it is working closely with our supplier to understand how this happened - however, it appears to be a type of blue cloth that is commonplace in factories/production lines

Waitrose will also make sure that everything possible is being done to prevent it happening in the future. Waitrose said in a recall notice published online: “We apologise that it has been necessary to recall this product and for the inconvenience caused.” A separate notice on the Food Standards Agency (FSA) reads: “Waitrose is recalling Salted Dairy Butter because it may contain pieces of blue cloth. The possible presence of blue cloth makes the product unsafe to eat.”

Any customers who are worried about the call are being advised to contact the Waitrose careline team on 0800 188 884. This month, Waitrose and Iceland also retained their market share positions at 4.5 per cent and 2.2 per cent respectively. Both retailers recorded sales growth of 3.7%. Asda holds 13.4% of the market, while Co-op accounts for 5.4%.
