Wales sees 25C temperatures as UK enjoys late summer sunshine

People in Wales enjoyed the best temperatures in the UK on Saturday, in what is likely to be the last dash of sunshine of the season.

Valley, near Holyhead in Wale,s recorded temperatures of 25.7C (78F) on Saturday, according to The Met Office, making it the warmest place in the UK.

Most of the country has enjoyed unseasonable sunshine and warm temperatures, ahead of the abrupt arrival of the tail end of Hurricane Humberto from Sunday.

Meteorologist Becky Mitchell said: "There is plenty of sunshine out there today, it's a warm day. There's barely any clouds across most of the UK.

"Today we're expecting temperatures around 26 degrees, maybe 27, which would be above average for the time of year.

"Obviously at this time in September it averages 17 or 18 in the South and about 14 in the North."

Talking about Hurricane Humberto, Ms Mitchell added that the remains of the category three storm are travelling across the Atlantic, and towards the UK.

She said: "There is a lot set to change tonight. We have got some heavy rainfall coming, mainly in the West. It will come in from Northern Ireland, Wales and western parts of England.

"The rain is set to come in tonight and it will be quite cloudy and wet from tonight into tomorrow, where we will start to see that heavy rain arrive."

The warm air from Europe is likely to have caused Saturday's sunny conditions, but may cause problems when it collides with the incoming weather systems from the West, according to Ms Mitchell.

Last September, the highest recorded temperature was 26.5C (80F), at Cambridge Botanical Gardens.

The warmest ever September day on record is from 1906, when 35.6C (96F) was recorded in Bawtry in South Yorkshire.

Researchers recently said that July was the hottest month ever recorded on Earth, with the United Nations noting that global rising temperatures are a product of climate change.

The hottest temperature ever recorded in the UK came in the same month, as a high of 38.7C was measured in Cambridge on 25 July, causing chaos on the roads, railways and airspace of the country.

On Friday, Greta Thunberg led a global climate strike from New York, to urge the United Nations and world leaders, to take action on climate change.
