Wales fly-half Callum Sheedy will be out for months after picking up a knee injury on the final day of the season.

The 28-year-old played his last game for Bristol Bears on Saturday and his team were victorious against Harlequins, running out 53-28 winners. However, Sheedy was forced to leave the field prematurely after sustaining what is believed to be a posterior cruciate ligament injury.

The Welshman, who tried to get back to his feet and return to the defensive line, was eventually pulled from the field just shy of half time, falling to the ground in the same phase that Ellis Genge suffered an injury of his own.

This means that Sheedy will be unavailable for Wales' summer tour of South Africa and will likely make his return to rugby in September.

That is also a major blow for Cardiff Rugby, who had secured the fly-half's signature ahead of next season. The injury could put him out for four months. but in some worst-case scenarios it could be longer than that and up to nine months. Cardiff supporters will no doubt hope for the swiftest of recoveries, though.

On the Wales front, well, the fly-half dilemma rumbles on with this latest twist. With Gareth Anscombe having ruled himself out of the tour, it leaves just Ioan Lloyd and Sam Costelow as genuine contenders for the fly-half role for Wales.

Cai Evans was also used as an option during the Six Nations.

Sheedy currently has 16 caps for Wales and will be hoping to add to that tally in years to come. It comes just a few months after he picked up a medial collateral ligament injury ahead of the Six Nations, which he missed.

Bears unfortunately missed the Premiership play-offs by two points, with Saracens pipping them to fourth place.
