The BBC has revealed the cast for its new crime drama series Sherwood, as filming gets underway.

David Morrissey, known for his role as The Governor in The Walking Dead, will lead the ensemble cast as a detective tasked with finding the link between two killings that spark a manhunt in a Nottinghamshire mining village.

The six-part crime drama, inspired in part by real events, will follow the community left shocked by these killings, with suspicion and antipathy building between lifelong neighbours and towards the police force who descend on the town looking for answers.

Morrissey will be joined by Academy Award nominee Lesley Manville, who was recently confirmed to be replacing Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret in season five of The Crown.

She will play Julie Jackson, the stubborn wife of miner Gary (New Tricks' Alun Armstrong) who was one of only a few miners from Ashfield who protested on the picket line in the 1980s – something he doesn't let anyone forget, even decades later, which puts him at odds with his neighbours.

Another of the town's resident couples will be played by Lorraine Ashbourne, who recently had regular roles on The Crown and Bridgerton, and Philip Jackson (Raised by Wolves, My Week with Marilyn).

They'll play Daphne and Mickey Sparrow respectively, while Perry Fitzpatrick, known for roles in Line of Duty and This Is England 90, will join the cast as their son, Rory.

The cast is also comprised of lots of other familiar faces from British TV, with many harking from other crime dramas. Law & Order UK's Robert Glenister plays another detective investigating the killings, while Downton Abbey's Kevin Doyle and Joanne Froggatt also star.

The cast is rounded out by Adeel Akhtar, Stephen Tompkinson, Claire Rushbrook, Adam Hugill and Bally Gill.

All six parts of the new series were written and executive produced by James Graham, known primarily for his theatre work, who also wrote last year's hit limited TV series Quiz, based on his own play of the same name.

The three-part series told the story of £1 million jackpot winner Charles Ingram, who was accused of cheating his way to the top prize on gameshow Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?.

Sherwood is set to air on BBC One. A release date is yet to be confirmed.
