The Walking Dead was hit with tragedy earlier this month, as stuntman John Bernecker was injured during an on-set accident.

Bernecker sustained head injuries after falling 20 feet while rehearsing a fight and was taken to hospital, where his family elected to take him off life support.

At the San Diego Comic-Con panel for the show (and the Fear The Walking Dead spinoff), the cast and crew paid tribute to their co-worker.

"John passed away this week, after he was injured doing something he loved: helping tell stories that excite, entertain, and give people escape, " showrunner Scott Gimple said as he read from a statement (via Variety).

"He helped make movies and shows for people like everybody in this room. John was someone who was beloved in the stunt community, who helped train people and helped them break into the business.

"He was living his dream, and he helped other people do the same."

The panel observed a minute's silence in his memory, and it was revealed that the cast were unsure about whether they should even have a panel this year.

Production on the show was suspended for eight days following the events, and resumed last week.

The Walking Dead will air its 100th episode this autumn on AMC in the US and FOX in the UK.
