We have a lot of questions about The Walking Dead's Jadis and her Scavengers, but probably the biggest one of them all is, why on earth do they speak that way?

The Scavengers speak in broken English and use short sentences, which is unusual to say the least. But Pollyanna McIntosh, who plays leader Jadis, discussed the reasons behind it to ComicBook.com.

"It's a bit unnerving, you know, which seems to be very much her game," she explained.

"Her manipulation is strong, and that's always a really solid place to start as an actor, you know... I was surprised by how natural it felt to me to speak that way – because she is so minimalist with everything, and her people are, and you know nothing is wasted.

"It made sense to me already, and she's very precise about what she wants your response to be."

McIntosh added: "I like the weirdness of the language.

"I like how it keeps them both cohesive as a group and also the way it keeps a distance from outsiders. That weirdness is useful because nobody really knows what she's up to or why she's speaking like that."

McIntosh also said that she can see Jadis actually flipping back to Rick's side, despite double-crossing him in the season seven finale as part of a deal with Negan.

"I think she has a lot more respect for Rick than she does for Negan," she explained. "You can't make choices based on that, you know, in this world.

"Negan is not a cool guy and I don't like the way he's running things, either. So I think there's room for things to switch again."

We'll be seeing a lot more of Jadis in season eight, as McIntosh has been promoted to series regular.

The Walking Dead launches its eighth season on October 22 on AMC in the US. It will air on FOX in the UK.
