Walmart will add 100 new Pickup Towers across the US, according to Retail Dive.

The towers allow customers to pick up online orders in less than a minute by either inputting a numeric code received at order placement or scanning a barcode on their smartphone. This move follows the apparently successful deployment of 20 initial Pickup Towers earlier this month.

The towers are an extension of Walmart’s recent omnichannel push, which is aimed largely at click-and-collect shoppers. In addition to its latest initiative, the company started testing kiosks for automated grocery pickup in Oklahoma in June. The kiosks work similarly to the Pickup Towers, and are available 24-hours a day, adding an element of convenience that could draw in new and repeat customers. It's also been providing discounts to click-and-collect customers since April. If the company can carve out a reputation for offering a seamless click-and-collect experience, it may well be able to capitalize on the omnichannel promise, and turn its stores into a powerful advantage against Amazon.
