Dai Young insists his son, Thomas, will remain eligible for Test rugby despite new regulations which mean players must have won at least 60 caps to qualify if they play outside Wales.

Wasps flanker Young won two caps on the Wales summer tour to the Pacific Islands and will be a key figure in Sunday’s European Champions Cup clash against Harlequins at the Ricoh Arena.

His father, a leading candidate to replace head coach Warren Gatland after the 2019 World Cup, said: “Thomas is contracted until after the next World Cup, so nothing will change until then.

“He’s not affected by the new ruling until then, as he’s under contract here, and he signed that contract before he got in the Wales squad.

“That means he’s not a wildcard under current rules and he’s also not captured by the new law until his current contract finishes.”

Quins welcome back hooker Joe Gray, which means Dave Ward switches to the back row and will be in direct opposition to Young.
