Watch Hungarian Mayor's Dramatic Efforts to Keep Refugees Out of Hungary
A video posted to YouTube earlier this week shows the dramatic efforts undertaken by one Hungarian mayor to keep refugees out of the country, after Hungary tightened its border controls on Tuesday.
The slickly shot video shows Laszlo Toroczkai, mayor of Asotthalom—a village on the Hungarian border with Serbia—threatening refugees with imprisonment if they cross the border illegally, and instead recommending that they travel to northern Europe through Croatia and Slovenia.
Despite Asotthalom only being a small village with a population of around 4,100 people, the video has been shot on a rather epic scale. It comes complete with a cinematic soundtrack and movie-like shots, including one of a guard peering through binoculars, men riding on horseback and others, dressing in camouflage gear, rushing into a car.
At one point, Toroczkai advises refugees that crossing into Hungary as "a bad choice," and Asotthalom "the worst," and tells them "not to trust lying traffickers." Towards the end of the video he is pictured wearing sunglasses, standing with his arms folded in front of a line of police.
Hungary has extended efforts to keep refugees out after it began building a fence on its border with Croatia, which will be finished by Friday evening according to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
