A Watchmen TV series has been on fans' radars for a few years, and now the iconic comic book series is finally, officially, heading to our small screen.

Confirming that Watchmen really is under way at HBO, the Leftovers and Lost creator Damon Lindelof shared an image on Instagram teasing fans with 'day one'.

Day One.

Sadly, that's all the information we've got on the upcoming series at the moment, but we're pretty sure it'll be worth the wait.

Watchmen originated as a limited DC Comics series in the '80s, and was made into a live-action film in 2009 by Zack Snyder.

Some were expecting HBO to be considering a TV adaptation of the movie with Snyder directly involved two years ago, but the project was shelved – until now, that is.

Watchmen follows a group of retired superhero vigilantes in a dystopian 1985, but we're guessing it's still going to feel quite relevant.

After a former colleague is murdered, the last remaining vigilante Rorschach fronts his own investigation, enlisting the help of his otherwise retired friends.

So, it's basically like a grittier version of The Incredibles. (Or, er, Frozen.)

If a Watchmen TV series doesn't float your boat, don't worry – because there are rumours that an R-rated, animated version could well be on its way soon.
