Waterloo Road star Angela Griffin has opened up on her work behind the camera for the latest season of the BBC school drama.

Alongside starring as the school's headteacher Kim Campbell, Griffin has also been working behind the scenes as a director for two episodes of the upcoming season.

"I have directed two one-hour episodes of Waterloo Road that will go out on the actual television," the actress said in a video shared to the BBC show's Instagram, adding that it was the "perfect place" to begin her work as a director.

"I've always, always wanted to direct," she explained. "I felt like I kind of came in with a level up I suppose because I knew everyone's stories and that's kind of part of it."

Griffin went on to explain her fears ahead of stepping behind the camera, revealing that being comfortable with guiding her co-stars was a "litmus test" for her abilities as a director.

"My big worry was what will happen when I come in my normal clothes and start tellingly friend/co-stars what to do," the actress said, adding that her transition to behind the camera was "seamless".

"I never realised that I would buzz so much from other people's work, that's the biggest surprise," she continued. "Everyone was on my side and everyone knows my passion for the show so it is the perfect place to have started."

Angela didn't reveal which episodes she has directed in the new season, but a listing for episode three on the BBC website has named her as its director, with her second directing credit yet to be confirmed.

Her Waterloo Road co-stars were keen to share their praise for her work in the comments on the Instagram post.

"Made for it," Tillie Amartey (who plays Stacey Neville) wrote, while James Baxter, who plays Joe Casey, added: "100% sensation."

Season 13 of Waterloo Road premiered earlier this month on BBC, with all eight episodes already available to stream on iPlayer.

Ahead of the premiere, Griffin spoke to Digital Spy, teasing her character's feelings about the school becoming an academy.

"It's rife for a good bit of conflict there, but there will be lots of to-ing and fro-ing," she said.

"It's really interesting because, again, it's happening. Waterloo Road consistently reflects what's happening in real-life education systems right now, both emotionally and with the business side of it all."

Waterloo Road airs on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
