Waterloo station death: Engineer killed while working on travelator

A man has died at a London underground station while working on a travelator.

The engineer died early on Wednesday morning at Waterloo station during maintenance on the moving walkway.

British Transport Police are currently investigating the death, which is not believed to be suspicious.

A Transport for London (TfL) spokesperson said: “We are working with colleagues in the British Transport Police following an incident at Waterloo station in the early hours of this morning. An investigation is underway.”

Shortly after 7.30am, the Jubilee Line Twitter account said a one-way system had been put into place during the morning rush hour, posting: “Customers are advised to avoid interchange where possible.”

A statement from British Transport Police reads: "Officers were called just after 2.20am to London Waterloo Underground Station following reports that a contract worker had received an injury.

"London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade were already on scene and it became apparent the incident was more serious.

"Lifesaving attempts were very sadly unsuccessful and a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are currently working to identify the man and inform his family. Enquiries into the incident continue."

Social media users expressed their sympathy for the engineer's family, with one Twitter user saying: "Thoughts & condolences to family & colleagues of Engineer killed at Waterloo earlier while working on a travelator ... we should never forget the risks & challenges faced by others to provide us with safe transport!"

Full interchange is now available to all lines at the busy station, TfL said.
