Wayne Rooney pinpoints where it all went wrong for Man United flop Memphis Depay

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney believes Memphis Depay's inconsistency and what some may consider to be a flashy lifestyle set him up for failure at Old Trafford.

When the Dutchman arrived at United, there were high expectations that he would be a game-changer for the Reds. In his last season in the Eredivisie with PSV Eindhoven, Memphis bagged 22 goals from 30 appearances operating solely as a left winger.

However, when he was played in the same position for United things just did not click for him. Over the course of 53 appearances, he managed just seven goals and five assists for the club and was ultimately sold to Lyon in January 2017.

Since leaving Old Trafford, Memphis has managed to resurrect his career operating as a centre-forward these days. His performances in France earned him a move to Barcelona and last season the 30-year-old represented Atletico Madrid but he shall be departing the La Liga club at the end of this month.

Ahead of last night's goalless draw between the Netherlands and France, Rooney reflected on Memphis' stint at Old Trafford and where he felt it all went wrong at United. He told BBC's Match of the Day: "Firstly, you can never knock his work rate, his attitude in training. He always came in, he worked really hard every single day to try and improve himself. It was mainly, more a few things off the pitch.

"I've spoken about [when] he turned up to a reserve game once [trying] to be lowkey. He turned up in a Rolls Royce and a cowboy hat. That was Memphis.

"If you look at it, he was more of a winger at Manchester United and he's adapted, changed his game, his movement was fantastic. He's a threat [in front] of goal. He's probably a little inconsistent over the last few years, but I think he's a player the French team will have to keep an eye on because he's got ability."
