Wednesday season 2 finally confirmed by Netflix after cancellation fears

Netflix has finally confirmed Wednesday will return for season 2 after fears it would jump to rival, Amazon's Prime Video.

The Addams Family spin-off series, starring Jenna Ortega as the teen-version of the morbid character, has become an international smash following its launch in November.

In the two months since, it's become Netflix's second most-watched show of all time, with 1.237billion hours viewed within its first 28 days.

The only other shows on the streaming service in order to cross this mark so quickly were Stranger Things season 4, and Squid Game.

Speaking to Tudum.com, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar - the creators, showrunners and executive producers of the series, said: "It’s been incredible to create a show that has connected with people across the world. Thrilled to continue Wednesday’s tortuous journey into season two.

"We can’t wait to dive head first into another season and explore the kooky spooky world of Nevermore. Just need to make sure Wednesday hasn’t emptied the pool first."

"Thank you to everyone who watched and made the upcoming season possible," Ortega wrote on her social media following the announcement. "This has been pretty surreal."

The good news comes shortly after reports sparked fears the deal for Wednesday to be on Netflix could be cancelled, with MGM - who owns the intellectual property rights to the Addams Family - being sold.

Due to the success, it was alleged rival services like Prime Video could take the show over. Thankfully, this has now proven unfounded.

Wednesday offers an updated version of the long-held Addams Family story, switching the focus to the family's daughter as she is sent to Nevermore Academy, a boarding school for supernatural children.

Part teen-drama and part crime-thriller, Wednesday soon finds herself in the middle of a mystery as a monster starts terrorising the school and nearby town Jericho, which is steeped in history connected to Pilgrims.

The cast included Christina Ricci - who was previously famed for the child version of Wednesday - as the school's horticulturist, Catherine Zeta-Jones as Wednesday's mother Morticia, and Game Of Thrones' Gwendoline Christie as the school's headmistress, Principal Weems.

Wednesday is available to watch now on Netflix.
