Wednesday star Emma Myers has spoken about how her new BBC drama A Good Girl's Guide to Murder is going to be "heartbreaking" to watch.

The actor leads the six-part series, which follows Pip Fitz-Amobi (Myers), a girl who lives in a small town that has been rocked by a murder which took place five years previously.

Although the police and the whole town believe that schoolgirl Andie Bell was murdered by her boyfriend, Sal Singh, Pip isn't so sure.

"She doesn't believe [the person] who was accused of it did it," Myers explained in an interview with the BBC. "So she goes on this mission to uncover it herself. Along the way she finds out lots of twists and turns, secrets and some bad people.

"The show starts with this warm, happy tone, just a girl trying to do a school project. But as Pip uncovers clues, stories, it takes a shift. The show deals with a lot of themes of racism, sexual assault, and drugs and abuse.

"The way the show handles these topics is important. The way the story is told is heartbreaking to be honest with you. It's not the happy little town that people think it is."

A Good Girl's Guide to Murder will release all episodes on BBC iPlayer on Monday, July 1. It will be shown on BBC Three later in the month.
