On Monday, the Cannes Film Festival hosted the world premiere of HBO's latest original drama series, "The Idol."
Co-created by Sam Levinson, the man behind "Euphoria," along with Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye and Reza Fahim, the series — which became embroiled in controversy earlier this year after an explosive Rolling Stone report — revolves around an enigmatic LA club owner who secretly runs a cult akin to NXIVM and an aspiring female pop star.
While the two episodes that screened received a five-minute standing ovation, the first reviews and reactions have been much more divisive. Read about some of the reactions from critics here.
Viewers will be able to judge the series for themselves when "The Idol" debuts on HBO on Sunday, June 4 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Depp, 23, who is the only daughter of Johnny Depp, makes her television debut in the upcoming series.
The "Idol" is also the first major role for Tesfaye, who is best known for his musical endeavors under the name The Weeknd. He previously cameoed in 2019's "Uncut Gems."
In the series, Tesfaye plays Tedros, a nightclub owner, while Lily-Rose Depp plays a pop star named Jocelyn.
Blackpink's Jennie Kim also appears in the series. Details about her role in the show are not currently known.
The K-pop star posed for photos alongside other supporting cast members who make up Jocelyn's inner circle: Moses Sumney, Rachel Sennott, and Troye Sivan.
The premiere attracted a bunch of A-listers, including rapper Travis Scott.
Julia Fox walked the red carpet in an eye-catching dark lip and PVC-style dress.

Hank Azaria, best known for voicing several characters in "The Simpsons," also appears in the series. He was likewise joined by his wife at the after-party event.
Hari Nef, who has a supporting role in the series as a magazine interviewer, also made an appearance.
