Weeks After Shutdown, Digital Media Brand Jezebel Is Acquired By Paste Magazine Along With Long-Dormant Politics Site Splinter

Weeks after being shut down by private equity-backed G/O Media, pioneering digital brand Jezebel is being revived by Paste Magazine, which has acquired it along with another shuttered G/O property, Splinter.

Paste, a pop culture outlet launched in 1998 as a print magazine and now purely online, plans to assemble a new staff for Jezebel, whose closure resulted in 23 layoffs. Splinter, which was shut down in 2019, will return in time for the runup to the 2024 elections.

Jezebel, founded in 2007, earned a reputation for exploring a wide range of issues but in particular those affecting women. In announcing the acquisition, Paste said it “aims to amplify Jezebel’s impact with a shared focus on great writing, while delighting and informing their respective audiences.” The new owner also said it intends to preserve Jezebel’s editorial independence.

Deal terms were not disclosed.

“We are honored to bring Jezebel back to life and excited to welcome the site into the Paste Magazine family,” Paste Magazine Founder and Editor-in-Chief Josh Jackson. “The acquisition means that the critical information and content that Jezebel readers have come to rely on will live on. Our mission has always been to provide insightful, thought-provoking content that resonates with a diverse audience. Jezebel’s unique voice and commitment to storytelling make it a perfect addition to our portfolio.”

G/O Media bought the former Gawker portfolio, which included Jezebel, Deadspin, Gizmodo and several other brands, after the meltdown of Gawker after it was successfully sued. Funded by private equity firm Great Hill Partners, the company sought to cut costs and refocus the editorial mission of its sites. Deadspin staffers bridled at management’s mandate that they “stick to sports.” The entire workforce wound up walking out and creating a rival site, the employee-owned Defector.
