Welsh fly-half Dan Jones is set to sign for ambitious English championship club Ealing Trailfinders after getting released by the Scarlets.

The 28-year-old is a heavily respected professional having made 153 appearances for the Scarlets, scoring 682 points, while he played a pivotal role in the west Walians' PRO12 title win in 2017. Jones became a victim of the financial constraints in Welsh rugby and was recently released by the Scarlets who have Wales internationals Sam Costelow and Ioan Lloyd on their books.

Jones looked set to drop down to play in the newly-formed Super Rygbi Cymru but has been given a lifeline by ambitious English Championship winners Ealing. The Carmarthen born Jones is a safe pair of hands with his outstanding kicking game game, both off the tee and out of hand, along with his experience and game management being a big strength of his game.

As of next season all four professional sides in Wales - Cardiff, Dragons, Ospreys and Scarlets - will be operating off a salary cap of just £4.5m. One obvious consequence of having such a low playing budget is the regions will have to carry smaller squads, meaning dependable club players like Jones could slip through the net.

Jones' move to Ealing will see him link up with former Wales scrum-half Lloyd Williams who left Cardiff for London last summer.
