'I went to Euston and King's Cross to see how far out of London a £30 train ticket could get me'

In the heart of London, Euston and King's Cross stations are vital hubs for rail travel, connecting the capital with various parts of the UK. However, as many travellers know, train travel in the UK can be notoriously expensive. With summer round the corner, a day trip is always the answer.

Due to inflation and the rising prices, we were eager to explore exactly how far you could get from London with £30 from these central London stations. Train ticket prices in the UK have always been quite costly. They are among the highest in Europe, with costs that can vary dramatically depending on the time of booking, travel time, and the route.

For commuters, travellers, and students, finding a fare that doesn’t break the bank can be a challenging endeavour. Factors such as peak travel times can cause prices to surge, making even short journeys surprisingly expensive.

From Euston Station, which primarily serves destinations to the northwest of London, around £30 can cover a respectable distance if tickets are booked in advance. Here are a few potential destinations:

Birmingham: Often reachable on an off-peak return with some advance deals, Birmingham offers a rich industrial heritage and vibrant cultural scene. With £26 you would be able to travel to Birmingham news Street on a fast Midlands train. Not bad at all!

Stoke-on-Trent: Known for its pottery industry, this city can occasionally be reached within this budget, especially with singles that might be snagged in advance for around £23.70.

Manchester: London Euston to Manchester is £26.80 and is a great area to explore the beautiful culture, cities and countryside and history of northern England. Other day out places to visit that cost around £20 are Chelmsford Essex or Windsor.

Windsor is one of my personal favourites as it is easy to get to and holds historical value. Individuals can enjoy the Castle's history and the great works of art from the Royal Collection. Sounds like the perfect outing!

From King's Cross Station, the gateway to the north and Scotland, the £30 budget can also stretch to a few interesting places:

Edinburgh : Normally a ticket costs around £84 but a discounted railway ticket may be purchased for £40. It would have to be an advanced ticket in order to get the best deal possible, but it would be worth going all the way to Scotland!

Cambridge: A return ticket to this historic university town can usually be purchased for £28.10. Cambridge offers picturesque views, punting on the river Cam, and a trip full of architectural and academic history.

Peterborough : Located in the heart of rural East England, Peterborough, with its historic cathedral and serene landscapes, is often accessible within this budget.

Other places include Bedford coting £29.90 on a fast train (35 mins), Brighton for £22.60 and Milton Keynes for £25.50.

To maximize the value of £30, booking tickets well in advance is crucial. Rail operators typically release tickets up to 12 weeks before the date of travel, and these early bird tickets are often significantly cheaper. Additionally, traveling during off- peak times can also result in cheaper fares and less crowded trains.

Travellers can also benefit from railcards, which offer up to a third off rail fares. For those traveling frequently or even for tourists planning several trips during a stay, the savings can be substantial.

While train prices can be steep, strategic planning and flexibility in travel times can make exploring the UK by train more accessible. Whether it's a day trip toCambridge or a weekend in Birmingham, the destinations within reach from Euston and King's Cross for £30, while limited, can offer diverse experiences.

The key to unlocking these destinations economically lies in savvy booking practices and perhaps a bit of luck in bagging those ultra-low fares.
