I went to the tiny Cambridge café that is perfect for people watching

On a summer's day in Cambridge, the city centre can get rather busy with visitors wandering the streets and taking in the glorious sites. And when the busy streets get overwhelming, it's great to escape into the safe haven of a café. One such café, hidden in the shadow of Pembroke College, is the perfect place to get away.

Tucked away on Pembroke Street in central Cambridge, you could easily walk past the top of the road without realising that Trockel, Ulmann and Freunde is there. But despite being right in the centre of the city, this pint-sized café does feel slightly off the beaten track.

With chain cafés all over the city today, it can be difficult to find these smaller and more tranquil coffee shops. Although its name might make you think you've stepped into a café in the centre of Berlin, this German gem is right here in Cambridge. The café gets its name from its original owners who were German.

As soon as I stepped inside, the smell of strong coffee and fresh food made my stomach rumble. As a small coffee shop, the tables can definitely fill up quickly, so it is best to get there just before mid-day if you want a table. Getting there at 11am, I was served straight away and had my order in only a few minutes.

With the food and drinks straight as you walk in, there are two spaces with seating either side of the till. It is perhaps not the café to meet up with a large group of friends, but it is a great place for a quick spot of lunch or a coffee.

Reviewers of the café talking endlessly about its delicious baguettes and paninis. It seems to have developed a reputation as a place for easy lunchtime food and I just knew that I had to try them out.

As I am dairy free, I unfortunately couldn't try any of their famous brie and cranberry paninis that Cambridge locals always rave about, but I asked the barista to talk me through the selection and she happily showed me the lactose free options. I picked an egg and cress baguette and washed it all down with an oat milk cappuccino.

As a lover of people watching, I grabbed on of their tables that looks out onto the road. It was rather peaceful to sit and enjoy my lunch whilst watching the world go by out of the window.

The baguette was the perfect size and was just right for a lunch break meal. Nothing too fancy, but nothing too simple either. Trockel, Ulmann and Freunde is not the place to go if you're looking for an extensive lunch. It is however straight to the point on making sure you get a quick bite to eat which hits that lunchtime spot just right.

If you are the kind of person that enjoys a solo coffee date then this is a great café. Its small size means that every seat is a cosy spot and it is easy to tuck yourself away and enjoy some time to yourself.

Next time you're on Pembroke Street, heading down to Fitzwilliam Museum or passing Pembroke College, it's well worth stopping in!
