Stabbed police officer chased and detained suspect despite 'bleeding profusely'

A police officer who was stabbed in west London still managed to chase and detain a suspect despite “bleeding profusely”, the Met’s Police Federation has said.

The unnamed officer, in his late 20s, was taken to hospital after being seriously injured as he carried out a stop and search in Maida Vale on Tuesday evening but has been discharged.

Ken Marsh, chairman of the Metropolitan Police Federation, said the officer’s stop and search was “routine” and the suspect stabbed him under the armpit before running off.

“Despite bleeding profusely, the officer gave chase with two colleagues and actually helped detain the suspect,” he said.

“He (the injured officer) is OK now, thankfully.

“He’s obviously walking wounded, but he’ll be fine.”

Mohim Hussain, 40, of Maida Vale, was charged with grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a knife in a public place and is due in court on Thursday.

The Metropolitan Police Federation said the stabbing demonstrates what officers in London “every day”.

Marsh said last month that police “are not society’s punchbags”.

“We have families we want to go home to at the end of every shift. But the dangers are stark. And seemingly escalating,” he said.

In recent months, authorities have said 22 police officers were hurt responding to a south London street party in June and that more than 100 were hurt during demonstrations earlier this summer.
