Westminster attack: French schoolchildren among those injured in London terror attack

Three French teenagers on a school trip were among 20 injured when a car mowed down tourists during a terror attack in Westminster.

One of the three students, aged between 15 and 16, was thrown onto the roof of the car which ploughed into crowds of pedestrians at 2.40pm on Wednesday, according to French newspaper Le Telegramme.

Four people, including a police officer and the suspect, were killed in the attack, Scotland Yard said.

The pupils from a school in Concarneau, Brittany, had arrived in London on Sunday evening.

A spokeswoman for the Lycee Saint-Joseph de Concarneau confirmed three students were injured but said she could give no further information.

Meanwhile, French President Francois Hollande said: "Terrorism concerns us all and France knows how the British people are suffering today.

"We are doing everything to find out if French nationals have been involved."

Matt Haikin, 44, cycled across the bridge just moments after the attack.

He told the Standard: “I saw a car and as I came up to it I noticed someone next to it covered in blood.

“There were people standing around and others running towards. I assumed it was just an accident.”

The car then smashed into the railings of Westminster Palace before a knifemen stabbed a police officer to death.

Mr Haikin added: “Fairly shortly after I heard some shots. I thought then that something was going on.

“As I went over to see what was going on they were starting to move people back.

“I think I saw a couple of bodies on the ground. I couldn't tell if they were injured.”

Images emerged on social media of groups of school pupils being led away from the Houses of Parliament.

It is believed that more than 100 youngsters, who appeared to be aged between eight and 12, had been on educational visits to Westminster during the attack.

They are thought to have been kept within cordon inside the building.

Witnesses described some as “visibly shaken by what they had experienced” and “tearful”, Sky News reported.

Scotland Yard confirmed the incident is being treated as a terror attack and have deployed extra armed police across the capital.
