Whale Watchers Overwhelmed by 'Incredible and Rare' Sighting of Well-Known White Orca

Passengers and crew of a whale-watching boat in Monterey Bay, California, were “excited” on October 15, as a possibly leucistic pale orca nicknamed Frosty was spotted swimming in formation with a pod of killer whales.

Video by Evan Brodsky of Monterey Bay Whale Watch shows the white orca, identified by the California Killer Whale Project as CA216C1, traveling and hunting with its peers.

Brodsky said that the four-year-old calf was better known as Frosty because of its white complexion, which he said was the possible result of leucism or Chediak-Higashi Syndrome.

Brodsky took to Facebook the following day, saying that the crew couldn’t stop thinking about the “incredible and rare” encounter. Credit: Monterey Bay Whale Watch/Evan Brodsky via Storyful
