What does it mean if you talk to yourself? Psychologist reveals all
Many of us believe that talking to oneself is the ‘first sign of madness’ – an idea reinforced by Hollywood films in which unstable characters mutter constantly.
But is it actually anything to worry about?
Psychology Professor Molly Andrews of the University of East London aired her thoughts on Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour – after the issue was brought up by a popular Mumsnet thread.
In the post, a woman admitted to pretending she was a famous novelist – and talking out loud in that persona while she was alone.

But that’s perfectly normal, says Andrews – and talking to oneself, and having fantasies, is part of what makes us human.
Andrews said, ‘I don’t think it’s mad to talk to yourself, we do it all the time.
‘We’re unique in the animal kingdom in being able to imagine. Far from it being a source of madness, it actually gives us the ability to think about other worlds. It’s critical in what it means to be human.’
